Where is Jodie Foster trending?
Why is Jodie Foster trending?
The actress received the Cecil B DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2013 Golden Globes and gave a speech which many are calling her official ‘coming out’.
Starting her career in commercials at the age of 3, Jodie Foster was just 13 when she played the role of pre-teen prostitute Iris in the iconic Taxi Driver for which she was nominated for an Oscar. It wasn’t until 1989 that she actually received an Academy Award though, for her powerful performance in The Accused; the only film that I can remember being greeted with silence and stillness once the credits rolled. Although Foster has been nominated four times and won twice, she is perhaps still best known for her role as Agent Clarice Starling in the Silence of the Lambs Trilogy.
Throughout her career there has been speculation about her sexuality, however Foster has an uneasy relationship with the press and privacy following the coverage of Mark Hinckley’s assasination attempt on President Regan which was allegedley to impress the young actress. At last nights speech she said “I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago, back in the stone age. In those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family, coworkers and then gradually, proudly, to everyone who knew her. To everyone she actually met.” We’re with Jodie here – her sexual orientation has nothing to do with her ability to do her job, and we really don’t need to know all the intimate details of her life to enjoy watching her movies.
Congratulations on the award, Jodie. Much deserved.
